Donald Trump’s meeting with India’s Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Washington DC was a disaster, the US President did not turn up to greet him when he arrived at the White House; Trump snubbed him by doubling down on reciprocal tariffs at a joint press conference; Elon Musk insulted him by bringing his children to a business meeting.
Chief among them was the question of Trump’s newly announced “reciprocal tariffs”, in which he proposes to answer foreign import taxes on US goods with rates equal to what each country imposes.
Trump has long criticized India for its high tariff rate on foreign goods, even reportedly calling Modi the “king of tariffs”.
But at Thursday’s meeting, the two leaders announced they would pursue a “framework” for greater cooperation.“ Prime Minister Modi and I have agreed that we will be in negotiations to address the long-running disparities,” Trump said, referring to the US-India trade relationship.
US is looking to strengthen military ties with India, including potential sales of F-35 fighter jets under a 10-year defence cooperation plan. This move aligns with Washington’s broader strategy of countering China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
U.S. President Donald Trump faced backlash after dismissing an Indian reporter’s question during a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House. The interaction, captured on video, has since gone viral, sparking widespread criticism on social media.
